Our ChoirsNo experience is necessary to join any of our choirs. Placement in a particular choir depends upon a singer’s natural musical abilities at the time of the audition, as well as the type of choral experience that singer is looking for. Our choirs are not divided by age or grade, although they do tend to fall somewhat along age lines. All choirs sing a diverse repertoire in different languages and styles. All choirs perform in our three self-produced events each year—our Holiday Concert, our Spring Concert and our March fundraiser—in addition to other performance opportunities specially chosen for each group. Please see Register/Audition for more detailed information on how to join.
Junior Choir:This is our beginning level choir. Any child can be a member of this choir, regardless of musical ability—this is where they learn and grow! The usual age range for this choir is grades 2 to 5. In addition to our self-produced events, typical Junior Choir performances may include an appearance at Evanston’s MLK Day Celebration in January or other local event. The Junior Choir rehearses on Mondays, 4:15-5:15 at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center (927 Noyes St., Evanston), led by Associate Director Dr. Sarah Bartolome.
1st Winter/Spring Semester rehearsal: Monday, January 8th, 2018
Intermezzo:This is our intermediate level choir. A child’s singing ability and focus must be of a certain level for admittance to this choir. This choir is a good fit for singers who may have started in our Junior Choir but are ready for a new challenge, or perhaps for singers who might otherwise qualify for the Concert Choir (see below) but aren’t yet ready for the greater commitment. The typical age range for this choir is grade 3 through middle school. In addition to our self-produced events, typical Intermezzo performances include a Holiday set at the Levy Center Holiday Breakfast in December or a performance at the Young Evanston Artists Festival in May. Intermezzo meets once a week on Wednesdays, 4:15-5:30 at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center (927 Noyes St., Evanston), led by Associate Director Dr. Sarah Bartolome.
1st Winter/Spring Semester rehearsal: Wednesday, January 10th, 2018
Concert Choir:This is our top ensemble. Singers must have a solid sense of pitch and good focus for admittance to this choir. In addition to that, we are looking for singers who take particular pride in performing at a high level—who view singing not only as a fun activity but as a vehicle for personal achievement and growth. This is a true mixed-age group, with members literally from grade 3 through high school, with limited special internship opportunities for exceptional high school students. In addition to our self-produced events, the Concert Choir takes on the ECC’s highest-profile performances, such as official City of Evanston events, major private events, or collaborations with the Evanston Symphony and the North Shore Choral Society, as well as occasional outreach performances. The Concert Choir meets twice a week, on Tuesdays 4:15-5:45 and Thursdays 4:15-5:15 at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center (927 Noyes St., Evanston). It is led by Artistic Director Gary Geiger.
1st Winter/Spring Semester rehearsal: Tuesday, January 9th, 2018
Family Choir:Family Choir is a casual choir in which parents and kids of all levels, as well as individuals from our community, can have fun discovering the joy of all types of music by singing together in one group. This is our most open, casual group. There is no formal age limit, and all ability levels are accepted. There is no formal placement audition, although the director may ask a new member to hum a few bars of something to get an idea of his/her voice type and range. Literally anyone who can follow along can join in! People can register individually, but there are special rates for pairs of family members (e.g. a parent-child combo or couples), and for unlimited access for an entire family. Rehearsals are Friday evenings, 6:30-7:45 at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St., Rm. 107, Evanston, IL 60201, led by ECC Associate Director Bryan Johnson. You can download the special Family Choir Information and Registration Form here.
